Conscious Mind

Mind - The mind is the term most commonly used to describe the higher functions of the human brain, particularly those of which humans are subjectively conscious, such as personality, thought, reason, memory, intelligence and emotion. Although other species of animals share some of these mental capacities, the term is usually used only in relation to humans.

Mind (The Culture) - In Iain M. Banks' Culture novels, starships, planets and orbitals have their own Minds: self-conscious, hyperintelligent machines originally built by humanoid species but which have outsmarted their creators by several orders of magnitude since then.

Unconscious mind - ... unconscious or subconscious has been defined in a variety of ways over time, but in psychology it is considered to be the deepest level of consciousness, a part of which we are not directly aware, but still contains elements that affect conscious behavior. As defined by Sigmund Freud, the psyche is composed of different levels of consciousness, often defined in three parts as the waking consciousness, preconsciousness (which can be recalled with effort), and beneath both of these, the unconscious (which is ...

Division Theory - Division Theory, as a doctrine or mystical belief, holds that one's mind or nonphysical self is composed of two equal but opposite elements which both survive death, but tend to divide from one another in the process. These two components, variously identified as the spirit and soul, the conscious and unconscious, or the left-brain mind and the right- brain mind, thereafter experience dramatically different afterlife fates, one half going on to reincarnate while the other becomes trapped in a dream-like stasis which can seem like either ...

Journey to the Centers of the Mind: Toward a Science of Consciousness by Susan A. Greenfield,

Journey to the Centers of the Mind: Toward a Science of Consciousness by Susan A. Greenfield,
How do our personalities conscious mind and mental processes, our "states of consciousness", derive from a gray mass of tissue with the consistency of a soft-boiled egg? How can mere molecules constitute an idea or emotion? Some of the most important questions we can ask are about our own consciousness. Our personalities, our individuality, indeed our whole reason for living, lie in the brain conscious mind and in the elusive phenomenon of consciousness it generates. Thinkers in many disciplines have long struggled with such questions, often in ways that have seemed incompatible, if not downright contradictory. Philosophers have meditated on the subjective experience of consciousness, with little attention to the physical realm, while scientists have sought to establish a causal relation between brain function conscious mind and mind, often ignoring the qualitative aspects of experience. In Journey to the Centers of the Mind, neuroscientist Susan Greenfield offers an intriguing, unifying theory of consciousness that encompasses both phenomenological mental events conscious mind and physical aspects of brain function. Using information gathered from clues in animal behavior, human brain damage, computer science, neurobiology, conscious mind and philosophy, Greenfield offers a "concentric theory" of consciousness, conscious mind and shows how certain events in the brain correspond to our qualitative experience of the world. Demonstrating the ways in which we can interpret the experience of consciousness in terms of interactions among neurons, she explores how much we can learn by continuing to find the links between our physical conscious mind and mental inner worlds.

Being No One: The Self-Model Theory of Subjectivity by Thomas Metzinger,

Being No One: The Self-Model Theory of Subjectivity by Thomas Metzinger,
According to Thomas Metzinger, no such things as selves exist in the world: nobody ever had or was a self. All that exists are "phenomenal selves, as they appear in conscious experience. The phenomenal self, however, is not a thing but an ongoing process; it is the content of a "transparent self-model." In "Being No One, Metzinger, a German philosopher, draws strongly on neuroscientific research to present a representationalist conscious mind and functional analysis of what a consciously experienced first-person perspective actually is. Building a bridge between the humanities conscious mind and the empirical sciences of the mind, he develops new conceptual toolkits conscious mind and metaphors; uses case studies of unusual states of mind such as agnosia, neglect, blindsight, conscious mind and hallucinations; conscious mind and offers new sets of multilevel constraints for the concept of consciousness. Metzinger's central question is: How exactly does strong, consciously experienced subjectivity emerge out of objective events in the natural world? His epistemic goal is to determine whether conscious experience, in particular the experience of "being someone that results from the emergence of a phenomenal self, can be analyzed on subpersonal levels of description. He also asks if conscious mind and how our Cartesian intuitions that subjective experiences as such can never be reductively explained are themselves ultimately rooted in the deeper representational structure of our conscious minds.Metzinger introduces two theoretical entities--the "phenomenal self-model" conscious mind and the "phenomenal model of the intentionality relation"--that may form the decisive conceptual link between first-person conscious mind and third-person approaches to the conscious mind conscious mind and between consciousness research inthe humanities conscious mind and in the sciences. He also discusses the roots of intersubjectivity, artificial subjectivity (the issue of nonbiological phenomenal selves), conscious mind and connections between philosophy of mind conscious mind and ethics.
