Listening for God: Religion and Moral Discernment by Howard Lesnick,

Listening for God: Religion and Moral Discernment by Howard Lesnick,
Listening to God proceeds from the author's belief that a wide spectrum of people are attracted to religion, yet are wary of it. The book is designed to describe Howard Lesnick's own experience in coming to find in religious language religious belief and practice an expression of a belief for which, as Paul Tillich describes, "we have no name". Understanding that many individuals are uncomfortable with their disconnection with religion, Lesnick presents a book that is grounded in a single religious perspective yet manifests genuine appreciation, not only of other faith traditions, but also for the substantial bases for deep skepticism about any religious beliefs or practices. In the book, Lesnick recounts the odyssey of his own engagement with religion, from a mild form of conventional adherence to Conservative Judaism as an adolescent, to a long period of alienation from all religion, to a gradual, growing, religious belief and changed reengagement with both Judaism religious belief and other religions. The God of which Lesnick speaks is both the repository of truth about the moral life religious belief and the force that draws him to struggle to discern religious belief and follow it. Although he writes from a predominantly Jewish perspective, Lesnick addresses what it is to believe in God, regardless of religious perspective. The book articulates the ways in which the author found it illuminating to turn to religious language, religious metaphors religious belief and religious images, not as a source of metaphysical knowledge or belief but as an aid to understanding, an aid to discernment of moral truth religious belief and the way it can be an aid to those, like him, who are searching for that feeling that cannot be named.

The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature by William James,

The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature by William James,
James's masterful treatise on the psychology of individual religious experience was originally composed for the prestigious Gifford Lectures delivered at Edinburgh University in 1901-1902. Emphasizing subjective religious experience in its many guises, as opposed to the distinctions among specific creeds or theologies, this trenchant exploration of the religious imagination is still unsurpassed as an overview of the human belief in a transcendent reality, whether personalized as God or viewed impersonally as some higher spiritual reality. As such James's study is relevant to any religious context, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, "New Age, " or any other. James's gift for distilling the essential ingredients of the religious experience from the great mass of details is evident in every chapter. Taking the approach that extreme manifestations of the religious temperament give us more insight into the subject than the routine features of worship religious belief and ritual, he discusses many intriguing accounts of remarkable religious experiences, grouping these experiences into broad types: healthy-mindedness, the sick soul, the divided self religious belief and the process of its unification, conversion, saintliness, religious belief and mysticism. He also discusses the distinctions between religious experience religious belief and philosophy; psychological theories concerning the origin religious belief and nature of religious belief; religious belief and the overall value of religion to human well-being. James concludes that religious experience is real insofar as it produces real effects on peoples' lives religious belief and characters, religious belief and therefore it can religious belief and should be the subject of serious scientific inquiry.
